Bio and Stuff
Artist, curator, writer, professor…I’ve had a very fortunate and privileged career. And I think there’s still a rabbit or two waiting in the hat!
My current project, the art instruction website STRONGER ARTIST, is the most challenging I’ve undertaken, and the most exciting, too. In the midst of a career often spent in heady pursuits (or in the administrative thicket that higher education can be), Stronger Artist is eminently practical–a how-to manual for those who want to learn how to draw. It’s hard to overstate how refreshing that feels.
Everything prior to this moment–or at least going back to 1991, when I began teaching art to college students–seems to have been preparation for the now. I’m currently a full professor at Keystone College in La Plume, Pennsylvania, where I teach drawing, art and design history, and web design. I’ve also taught the many levels of painting and an assortment of other courses, including some I had no business teaching (yes, ceramics, I’m thinking of you).
Between 2002 and 2013, I served as Director of Exhibitions for the Linder Gallery at Keystone College. I’ve curated or supervised over 50 exhibitions for the Linder and other college galleries, and have written numerous critical and interpretive essays on the work of contemporary artists. In 2007, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts saw fit to award me its Arts Commentary Award. In 2013, I completed a summer internship in the Department of Contemporary Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, furthering my knowledge of curation and simultaneously becoming (probably) the oldest intern to work at the MIA.
As far as my artwork goes, my paintings, drawings, and small constructions have been shown in exhibitions regionally and throughout the US, in group and one-person shows. I’ve published a number of articles on teaching college-level drawing and design, and occasionally present my work at conferences and professional gatherings. My most recent presentation was at the WPCampus 2023 national conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
For those with inquiring minds, I earned a BFA in studio art from the University of Central Florida in 1989, and an MFA in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1991. Between 1993 and 1997 I studied in the Interdisciplinary Arts doctoral program at Texas Tech University, with a focus on curricula for teaching design at the postsecondary level.
